This scrambling course in the mountains of Snowdonia will give you the experience and skills to start scrambling and exploring independently. We start with the basics and work up to grade 1 scrambles on more challenging terrain than normal hillwalking. You will be taking in exciting routes such as Tryfan’s North ridge, Y Gribin and Crib Goch to name a few. It’s the ideal course for improving your scrambling skills safely.

Scrambling is a great way to enjoy the mountains where narrow ridges and steep gullies can be included in a walk to give a more adventurous day out. For many the thrill of questing off the beaten track onto steeper ground is where the fun in the mountains of Snowdonia really begins.

What does the intro to Scrambling Snowdonia course cover?

You will Scrambling some of the classic rocky ridges in Snowdonia as we show you how to travel safely and how to protect yourself and your scrambling partner on rock steps, descents and gullies. Topics that we cover include:

  • Understanding and using the scrambling guidebooks and grading system
  • Route finding on steep ground
  • Movement skills on steep ground
  • Safeguarding rock steps, descents and gullies.
  • Basic or emergency use of rope

Who is the Scrambling Snowdonia course suitable for?

Our Scrambling Snowdonia intro course is aimed at the hillwalker who is confident walking in the mountains but looking to learn the skills needed to move onto steeper ground where a rope may not necessary, but a good range of skills and techniques are. You want to leave the beaten track and explore the more interesting routes. You will also learn how to develop your footwork and build confidence and with good route choice feel less nervous on exposed terrain.

Why is Snowdonia perfect for Scrambling?

Northern Snowdonia has one of the greatest concentations of quality scrambling routes in the UK. Venues are chosen on the day to suit the weather and the group but can include Tryfan, The Glyders, Y Lliwedd, Snowdon, Crib Goch (in perfect weather with an experienced group) and some of the less known rocky ridges dependent upon the weather. Snowdonia is an ideal base as it offers a wide range of scrambles from gullies to exposed ridges and many. Even the most remote scrambles in Snowdonia can be accessed within 90minutes, some are almost roadside . You may also finish on or close to summits to give a true mountain experience. Having the ability to follow the scrambling routes also means you will often avoid the crowds on the main paths – a definite bonus!
